ALS, 1854 April 19 : Choctaw Nation to Sylvanus Ladd.

Is sorry he could not "awaken more of the missionary spirit" among people in Burlington, N.Y. Some 12 or 13 places for preaching under his supervision and 10 "native" helpers. Repeal of Missouri Compromise of 1820 and the Nebraska bill are exciting the people of the free states with the expectation of all U.S. territory being free, especially if Congress does not intervene. Bill in Congress to make 3 territories out of Indian country toward amalgamation of Indians and whites.
